From maker manual to PMS-ready data
How we turn maker manuals into PMS data accurately, then six real pages from the SN2656 engine-room manuals. Each case puts the page exactly as the yard delivered it next to the same data in the PiscesER1 workbook. Select a row to find it on the page.
How it works
AI reads, checks and structures every page. A marine engineer only sees the rows the checks flag. Every value keeps its PDF page number.
How we get accurate extraction
No single reading is trusted. Every value passes through layers of checks, and only what still disagrees reaches a person.
| Step | What it does | Caught in this demo |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Route each page | Classify every page first (maintenance grid, parts list, drawing, procedure, scan) and send it down the path built for that kind of page. | Sideways schedule grid sent to the grid path; 550-page office scan sent through OCR |
| 2. Extract with marine context | Extraction tuned for maker manuals: keep every grid column, copy part and drawing numbers exactly, read any language. | ME schedule from 6 to 18 of 25 rows; part numbers like A30100B and E400808B4 exact |
| 3. Check the structure | Rules a correct table must obey: same cell count as the header, one interval per task, valid part-number patterns, numeric quantities, unique positions. | Header with 19 columns but rows with 18 cells: whole table flagged |
| 4. Read it a second time | An independent second read of the page image, compared cell by cell with the first. Agreement passes; disagreement is re-read at higher zoom. | 7 shifted marks on the ME schedule corrected; a human transcription slip on the compressor table caught |
| 5. Cross-check documents | Compare what different documents say about the same part: O&M manual, vessel drawing, exploded view, model-specific footnotes. | 38 / 38 drawing labels match the parts list; superseded, renamed and extra parts flagged |
| 6. Apply company rules | Write the result in the customer's format and naming standard, e.g. the PiscesER1 rules for case, units and dual-frequency job titles. | Jobs titled "6M/2000 RHS"; ALL CAPS part numbers; doubts in Colour Identification |
| 7. Engineer on exceptions | A marine engineer reviews only flagged rows, with the source page beside each one. Decisions are kept, so sister ships and the next vessel need fewer reviews. | 12 ME schedule rows involving interval "B" and 3 compressor jobs sent for review |
Accuracy is measured, not assumed: vessels the team has already finished by hand (PDFs plus final Excel) become the answer key every change is tested against.
Main engine maintenance schedule
Everllence B&W 5G70ME-C10.5-GA. Each task has an x under its overhaul interval in running hours. This one page sets the overhaul plan for the most critical machine on board.

Screw air compressor maintenance table
DongHwa Pneutec NeX-37WB. Each interval column pairs running hours with a calendar period, and the symbol says what to do: ○ check, ◎ clean, ● change. This maps straight onto the PMS template's dual-frequency jobs.

Purifier bowl parts list, vessel drawing
The yard's finished drawing for hull 2656's SJ85HH purifiers. Unlike the generic manual list, it carries the real orderable part numbers and materials, a crossed-out superseded part and footnotes. The page has no text layer, and several part numbers mix letters and digits (A30100B, E400808B4).

About this sheet
| Pos. | What the cross-check found | |
|---|---|---|
| 105 | Old part no. 184738001 is struck through on the drawing; current part is 184745001, special coated for heavy fuel oil | superseded |
| 106 | Called "spring pin" in the O&M manual, "pin" on the vessel drawing | renamed |
| 121 | Gravity disc part no. is on a separate list of gravity discs | other page |
| 135 | Socket set screw appears only on the vessel drawing | extra part |
| 319, 321-323 | On the manual's bowl list but not on this vessel list; located elsewhere in the drawing set | to locate |
HFO purifier general drawing
Samgong SJ85HH three-view drawing. Extraction reads the tables and title block. Verification names the dimensions and fittings, which lets us link the drawing to the PMS and redraw it as a clean 2D schematic.

Purifier bowl exploded view
The drawing that goes with the parts list above. Our extraction read all 38 labels and their assembly order. We place each label on the drawing and link it to the vessel's part numbers, so a spare can be found and ordered by pointing at it.

Emergency generator engine, scanned manual
Cummins KTA38 front view from a 550-page manual scanned on an office copier, with no text layer at all. We read the part list and place each number on the drawing.

Click a marker or a list item to link the two.
Item 9 is an arrow showing rotation, so it does not become a PMS component. Names follow the company's PMS naming guidelines.
Accuracy at a glance
